JuJutsu

Tadashii Do Jujutsu

Tadashii-do Jujutsu is a style of Jujutsu developed by Malcolm Bale Sensei after many years of martial arts training. The focus of Tadashii-do Jujutsu is self defense, utilizing simple and effective techniques that can be taught to and utilized by anyone regardless of size, strength, age or gender.

Tadashii-do literally means “righteous way” and reflects the intent of the style to be used as both a self defense art and as a way of life that encourages the student to embark on a journey of continuous self improvement and self mastery.

Jujutsu is an ancient martial art developed by the samurai warriors of Japan. Jujutsu is literally translated to English as the “soft art” however this does little to capture the essence of the art or to describe its methods. Jujutsu uses a combination of striking, joint locks and manipulations, throws and strangulations to neutralize an opponent.

Jujutsu historically was taught within schools that specialized in the use of weapons and was to be used by the samurai when his weapon was lost or broken. The unarmed samurai was at a distinct disadvantage against armed opponents therefore it was essential that the techniques used be effective. Jujutsu was traditionally taught only to members of the samurai class until the end of the Edo period. With the abolishment of the samurai class at the beginning of the Meiji Restoration (circa 1867) jujutsu began to be taught to the general public and was beginning to be taught outside of Japan by the turn of the century.

Jujutsu is the art from which other Japanese martial arts have evolved, namely Judo, which was developed by Jigoro Kano and Aikido which was developed by Morihei Ueshiba. Techniques from jujutsu  are widely integrated into military and police systems and can be seen in other grappling arts around the world.

JuJutsu has never been as popular as some of the more customary Martial Arts, mainly because most people don't even know what it is. Everyone has heard of Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu and have a vague idea planted on the mind as to what they are.

Competitive Mixed Martial Arts have been increasing in popularity over the last couple of years with TV coverage of UFC and Ultimate Fighter. The excitement in the cage has at least helped to raise awareness of Jiu-Jitsu as many fighters have such a background.

However, it still does not in any way an accurate depiction but some widespread general coverage is better than none at all.

There are different categories that Jujtsu can be divided between. Within each category there are also different styles.

Okay, first the general categories are Traditional, Sport and Modern. There are many similarities between many techniques but overall, each category is very different.

The Traditional Jujutsu styles make an effort to teach techniques as they were originally taught. There is also a large emphasis on etiquette and formalities. Techniques are referred to with their original Japanese names.

The sporting category is competitive JuJutsu. A large portion is dedicated to ground fighting (grappling). There is also a larger requirement for physical fitness and strength on top of all the technical skills required. There is a point scoring and submission process involved with the competition.

The last basic category contains the styles that have evolved to suit modern Self Defense. Some Traditional and Competitive techniques are simply not practical for the street. Many dirty "tricks" have been incorporated for effectiveness in potentially life threatening situations.
